about GATE


The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India Examination conducted by the Seven IITs and IISC, Bangalore, on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD),Government of India. The objectives of GATE is to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Postgraduate Programs Engineering at the National level. Every year one IIT or IISc is selected as the Organizing Institute.

            The main objective of GATE is to identify the quality of the students and assess their potential to continue higher education. Through GATE, it is easy to evaluate the students who have the required skill set and consistency to pursue higher studies in the field of Engineering.

GATE Importance

  • Cracking GATE is important for you if you expect to get admission to postgraduate programmes and avail scholarship benefits for studying in various government-engineering colleges of India.
  • Once you qualify in GATE, you are eligible to pursue doctoral programme in your chosen branch of science like, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Application.

GATE Examination Details:


  • GATE question paper is divided into two different sections namely, Section A (Objective Type) and Section B (Problem Type), which are of 75 marks each. You have to complete this paper of 150 marks within 3 hours.
  • As you can appear for GATE even if you are not from engineering related field, it is important that you choose the right paper while applying for the exam.
  • You have to opt for your subject and study as per the syllabus mentioned in the GATE brochure.
  • You can either opt for Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering or choose from other subjects like, Mathematics, Physics, etc.

How To Apply For Gate
There are two different ways by which candidates can apply for GATE 2007, namely Online Registration and Offline Registration. Detailed information about each of these processes is given below.

Application fee: Russ. 900 for general category and Rs. 400 for SC/ST category.
The application fee is not refundable.
1. How to Pay?
In order to fill in the online application, payment has to made apriori. The payments can be made using SBI ATM or Demand Drafts. The detailed procedure of making payments using SBI ATM is explained below:

Step11: Collect the original slip
is to mean that you have to press x on the screen of ATM monitor.
Instructions: Do not forget to send the Original Transaction Slip, SC/ST or Disability Certificate (if applicable) alongwith the application form (duly filled and signed) that is generated while filling-in the Online Application to the Organizing Chairman, GATE-2007, IIT Kanpur, Kanpur-208016. Remember that in the Application Form you have to paste the recent Passport size Photograph (unsigned) with light background.
Payments can also be made through the Demand drafts (Rs. 900 for general category and Rs. 400 for SC/ST category). The Drafts should be made in favour of Chairman GATE, IIT Kanpur on any nationalized bank payable at Kanpur. In the event of paying via Demand drafts, please send the original Demand Draft (instead of the ATM Transaction Slip) together with the application form directly to Chairman GATE, IIT Kanpur, Kanpur-208016. Other enclosures are same as mentioned earlier.

Offline Registration
Application fee: Rs. 1000 for general category and Rs. 500 for SC/ST category. The application fee is not refundable.
Information Brochures and Application Forms are obtainable on payment of cash from the designated Bank Branches corresponding to each zone. The bank pay-in-slip in original must be attached to the candidate's application during submission. Candidates can also obtain Information Brochures and Application Forms by Post from/or personally at the GATE offices. For this purpose a Demand Draft is to be sent for the amount as above to the Chairman, GATE of the corresponding zonal GATE office, along with a request letter and two self-addressed slips.
Filled in Application Form along with the bank pay-in-slip / receipt of payment from GATE office must be sent to the respective zonal GATE office depending on the examination city where the candidate wishes to appear.
